Is Our Flooring and Bathroom Work Built to Code?

Before you hire anyone to remodel a bathroom or install a floor, it helps to know how the hidden work is handled. Here is what building to code means for our projects.

The short answer

Yes. Every job we complete is built to meet code, whether it is a bathroom remodel or a new floor. It is not an add-on or an upgrade. It is how we approach the work from the first day to the last.

Why homeowners ask about code

A remodel is a big investment, and most of what makes it last ends up hidden behind tile or under a finished floor. Homeowners across Aurora and the Denver metro ask about code because it is a simple way to ask a bigger question: will this be done properly, even in the parts a homeowner will never see? Our answer is that the hidden layers get the same care as the finish you look at every day.

What it means for a bathroom remodel

A bathroom is the room in your home where water is always part of the job, so the work behind the finish matters most. On every bathroom remodel we follow the same approach:

  • Clear the old surfaces. Old fixtures and finishes come out so we can see what we are working with.
  • Check the layout. We look at how water actually moves through the space before anything new goes in.
  • Waterproof before tile. Waterproofing and layout are checked against code before tile, marble or natural stone goes up.
  • Install level and tight. Your finish goes on level, with tight seams.

Why the layers behind the tile matter

A tiled shower wall is built in layers: framing, a waterproof membrane, then the tile, marble or stone you chose. The finish is what you see, but the membrane is what protects the wall. Getting that layer right is a big part of building a bathroom that lasts.

What it means for a new floor

On a flooring installation, the work starts below the surface too. Our process looks like this:

  1. Clear the old flooring. We take out what is there so the base can be inspected.
  2. Check and prep the subfloor. The subfloor is checked, leveled and repaired where needed.
  3. Install the new floor. Hardwood, tile or natural stone goes down square and tight at every seam, room by room.
  4. Finish the details. Trim and transitions are completed, and we finish with a clean walkthrough.

The subfloor is the foundation

A floor is only as good as what it sits on. Checking and prepping the subfloor before installation is what lets the finished hardwood, tile or stone stay flat and tight. It is the least visible step and one of the most important.

The walkthrough: where you see the result

Building to code is something we do, and the walkthrough is where you get to see the outcome. When the work is finished, we walk the bathroom or floor with you before we call the job done. If you have questions about anything you are looking at, that is the time to ask.

Questions worth asking any contractor

Whoever you choose for a remodel, it is reasonable to ask how they handle the parts of the job you cannot see. A few good questions:

  • How is the subfloor checked and prepared before a new floor goes down?
  • How are waterproofing and layout handled before tile goes up in a bathroom?
  • Will there be a walkthrough when the job is finished?

We are glad to answer all of these for your project.
